Walking in Yorkshire

Walking in Yorkshire
I'm standing high up on the Cleveland Way. In front of me the sun seems to be climbing out of the sea. To my left there's a patchwork of fields, tumbling down to Robin Hood's Bay, nestled against the headland. Far off to the right I can see the chalk cliffs of Flamborough Head.

A couple of days ago I was striding across the Yorkshire Dales, walking the Dales High Way - 90 miles of the most exhilarating walking you'll find anywhere in the country. And the pub I stopped at for lunch wasn't too bad either!

If you want a walking holiday, I challenge you to find anywhere better than Yorkshire - especially if it's variety that you want. And it doesn't matter how seriously you take your walking either - you can start off with the most gentle stroll round York's city walls, or you can really challenge yourself on some of the toughest walks you'll find anywhere. Add in the fact that you can stay in a selection of the best cottages and holiday homes that you'll find anywhere in the country, and it's hard to beat the 'broad acres.' A personal recommendation is to rent a holiday cottage in Yorkshire with a company such as Rent My Cottage.

Why not start off in Haworth - Bronte country? You can take a guided walk round the town, learning about the three sisters. And if the tales of Anne, Emily and Charlotte inspire you to try a bit of 'Wuthering Heights' for yourself, follow the spectacular Ingelton Waterfalls Trail. It's not too tough - around 4.5 miles - and you'll go through the stunning Dales countryside via a series of waterfalls.

But if you want a real challenge then take the Dales High Way. You'll start in the World Heritage village of Saltaire, and you'll take in some of the most stunning scenery you'll ever see. It's not a walk for the beginner, but it's one of the most rewarding I've ever done.

Of course, Yorkshire's not all about the Dales. There's a stunning coastline stretching from the mouth of the Tees to Spurn Point, and you can reach it on the Cleveland Way - 110 miles from Helmsley to Filey with the moorland sections taking you through the home of red grouse and curlews.

Wherever your walking takes you in Yorkshire you can be sure of two things: a walk to suit your ability and ambition - and the most dazzling views and stunning scenery you could ever wish for. And at the end of the day, your holiday cottage will be waiting. Nestled in the Dales or gazing out to sea, it will be the perfect place to relax - and give your feet a well earned rest!
